BOROUGH NEWS
We want to remind you that in order to burn in Youngwood you need to go to the borough office and obtain a free burn permit. That permit will allow you to burn only natural materials excluding leaves. Also, the borough is able to pick up brush if the resident moves the brush to the edge of their yard into one man manageable sizes and contacts the PW Garage to schedule pick up (724) 925-3033.
EARTH DAY CLEAN UP
Clean up will take place 4/16/11 starting at 8:30 a.m. meeting at the Fire Dept. Lunch & materials will be provided. Interested groups should contact John Storey to plan for lunch and the safety of the volunteers. (724) 925-3033. Mayor Joan Derco looks forward to another successful year. We ask that you please dress appropriately for the weather, wear sturdy shoes or boots, and bring gloves.
MEMORIAL DAY:
The VFW and the Fire Department are working together on this year’s parade and services. Some details about the day are: Line up will be at 8:30 am at Lincoln & Sherwood. The parade starts at 9:00 with light refreshments to follow at the Fire Department as in years past. There will be a memorial service held at the Youngwood Cemetery starting at 11:30.
REFLECTIVE HOUSE NUMBERS
Blue background house numbers will be available for residents to order through the Borough at
their own expense at a discounted price. All orders are to be prepaid. Samples and order sheets are available at the borough office for residents to fill out.

YOUR GOVERNMENT AT WORK
March Council Meeting
Youngwood Borough Council held their regular monthly Council Meeting on Monday March 7, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Various options for the 2011 street program was reviewed. Maintenance Department workers’ uniforms were discussed. Funds were released in the amount of $25,000 from the Fire Equipment and Apparatus Fund. The funds will be used for the tower truck payment. Warren Ullrich and Cliff Long will attend a Spring Road Maintenance seminar on March 30th.
April Agenda Meeting
Youngwood Borough Council will hold their monthly Agenda Meeting on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. General discussion and public hearings. With the passing of Councilman, Tom Bompiani, the council has 30 days to appoint someone to fill his seat until the end of the year. WEDNESDAY EVENINGS live bands play music from the Big Band Era, 7:30-10:30 p.m.
SATURDAY EVENING dance with The Dallas Marks Band on Sat., April 2.
The Youngwood Volunteer Hose Co. #1 has answered 114 calls to date.
SPECIAL EVENT: The Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary will be holding a CARD PARTY on Thursday, April 14 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. For more information call Faith at 724-925-7735.

The Hempfield Garden Club
Members will meet on Thursday, April 7 at 11 AM, at Christ United Methodist Church in Youngwood. Following the business meeting and lunch, the program will be an informative and interesting film presentation on herb gardening. Guests are always welcome by calling 724-635-0339.
GARDEN TIP: Get a head start on preparing your planting areas by WARDING OFF WEEDS - here's how: 1. Remove weeds you overlooked last year from beds and borders. Nip away any little seedlings that are starting to pop up. 2. Surround plants with 3-4 inches of compost or wood chips. 3. Before weed seeds begin to send up shoots, apply a pre-emergence herbicide, such as Preen, about the time forsythias bloom.

Youngwood Area Library
Library hours are: Monday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. & Tuesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Library Story time for 3-5 year olds with Miss Lynn will be held at the Youngwood Area Library on Thursdays, April 7, 14, 21, 28 at 10:30 am and 1:00 pm. Youngwood Area Revitalization & Development
There are still a few Community Cookbooks left and are available at Adam’s Hardware, Bayer’s Pharmacy, Hepler’s Hardware, the Youngwood Library, Youngwood Borough Office, The Hair Station, and Cyber Depot. The books are $10 each. These make great Easter gifts.
The next community event that YARD will be sponsoring is the ANNUAL COMMUNITY YARD SALE to be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.. People from far and wide look forward to our annual event. It is a big fund raiser for our organizations and churches, they will receive information in the mail. Residents may put their names, phone #, address, and three items for sale on a slip of paper plus $2 to cover publicity and drop it off at the boro office. For anyone wishing to set up on the grounds of the Community Center the cost is $10. All checks payable to YARD. Paid participants will receive a green sign to post at their location. Youngwood Senior Citizens
Wednesday, April 13. After the Lenten service at Christ United Methodist Church, the Senior Citizens will meet in the sanctuary for a brief meeting and then a talk on driver safety by State Police Lt. John Rock. Please join us.

Youngwood Business Association is holding their Annual Wine Tasting on Saturday, April 9, 2011. Contact any member of YABA for information.

The Youngwood Lions Club
The Lions Club will be holding its annual Pancake & Sausage breakfast on Saturday April 9, 2011. The breakfast will be held at the St Paul’s United Methodist Church in Youngwood. Tickets are $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children 6 thru 12. Tickets may be purchased through any Lions Member, Hayden's Pharmacy, and at the door. There will also be Home baked goods available for purchase. Come join the fund raiser. Lions Club brooms are now available at Hayden's Pharmacy. The annual White Cane fund raising event will also be held on April 9 at Sams Club. Funds raised go to services to the Blind. The Club is currently seeking civic minded individuals to become Club members. Please contact any Lion for details.

The Youngwood Area Park & Pool is excited to announce that the 2011 season will mark the 50th year of its existence. The committee is planning a number of events that will celebrate this milestone. Watch for more details as plans develop for this summer.

State Representative, Tim Krieger is inviting you to a Legislative Breakfast on Saturday, April 16 at New Stanton Fire Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Breakfast is free but reservations are required, RSVP by Mon., April 11 to his office, 724-834-6400. Come discuss any state related issues that may concern you.
